Telling the Time

In Italian the time is usually plural with le (from le ore, feminine plural): sono le tre. Only three cases are singular: è l'una (1 o'clock), è mezzogiorno (noon) and è mezzanotte (midnight).

È l'una.	It is one o'clock. (singular!)
Sono le tre.	It is three o'clock. (from two: plural)
Sono le nove e mezza.	It is half past nine (literally "nine and a half").
Sono le dieci e un quarto.	It is a quarter past ten.
Sono le otto meno un quarto.	It is a quarter to eight.
È mezzogiorno / È mezzanotte.	It is noon / midnight.

Watch out — the Italian half hour: sono le nove e mezza means half past nine. Italians count forwards from the full hour, not backwards.
