Privacy Policy

This page explains what data Linguine collects, why, and what your rights are. We try to keep it short and plain.

Who is responsible

The controller responsible for your data under the EU GDPR and the Swiss FADP is:

What we collect

• Account info: name, email, hashed password (or Google profile if you sign in with Google).
• Learning state: exercises you've attempted, vocabulary you're reviewing, your streak, your XP.
• Purchases: book purchase records and the Stripe customer ID linked to your account. We never see your card details — Stripe handles that.
• Server logs: standard request logs (IP, timestamp, path) kept briefly for debugging and abuse prevention.

Why we may process your data (legal basis)

• Performance of a contract: running your account and delivering books you buy (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)).
• Consent: engagement/marketing emails and any non-essential cookies — you can withdraw it any time (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
• Legitimate interests: keeping the service secure and understanding which content is used, via privacy-friendly aggregate counts (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
• Legal obligation: keeping invoices and tax records for the period the law requires (GDPR Art. 6(1)(c)).

What we don't do

• We don't sell your data.
• We don't share it with advertisers.
• We don't run third-party ad networks.

Who we share data with

We don't sell your data. We rely on a small number of processors who handle data on our behalf under data-processing agreements:

• Stripe — payment processing for book purchases. We never receive your full card details.
• Google — only if you choose "Sign in with Google", to verify your identity.
• Our hosting and email providers — to run the servers and send transactional and (if you opted in) engagement email.

Email

We use your email for transactional messages (password resets, book receipts) and — if you opt in — engagement emails (lesson reminders, streak nudges, new-content updates). You can turn engagement emails off any time from your profile, and every one of them has a one-click unsubscribe link.

Cookies

We use a session cookie to keep you logged in, and a CSRF cookie to keep forms secure. We don't use third-party tracking cookies. Read the full Cookie Policy.

Your rights

• Access: ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you.
• Correction: update your name and email yourself from your profile.
• Deletion: delete your account from your profile. Your attempts, decks, streaks, and the link from your Stripe customer record are removed. Past invoices are kept for accounting purposes as legally required.
• Portability: contact us and we'll export your data in a standard format.
• Objection & withdrawal: object to processing based on legitimate interests, and withdraw any consent at any time.
• Complaint: you may lodge a complaint with the Swiss FDPIC or your EU data-protection authority.

Data retention

We keep your account and learning state for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we remove that data immediately, except records we're legally required to keep (e.g. invoices).
