Modals for the Past — Must Have, Should Have
Per fare congetture sul passato, combini il modale con have + participio passato. I livelli di certezza funzionano esattamente come al presente — solo che il tutto è già successo (oppure no).
La scala del passato
| Forma | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| must have + PP | quasi certo che sia successo | She must have missed the train. |
| can't have + PP | quasi certo che NON sia successo | He can't have finished already! |
| might / could / may have + PP | potrebbe essere successo | They might have gone home. |
| should have + PP | rimpianto o aspettativa non realizzata | You should have called me. |
| shouldn't have + PP | critica o rimpianto | I shouldn't have eaten so much. |
La pronuncia parlata
Nell'inglese parlato have praticamente sparisce — diventa 've:
- must've (suona come "MUST-uv")
- might've (suona come "MAIT-uv")
- should've (suona come "SHUD-uv")
Per questo alcuni britannici scrivono persino "I should of called" (sbagliato, ma frequente). Di' "shoulda, woulda, coulda" e suona idiomatico; ma quando scrivi usa sempre should have.
