Review & Farewell
Bringing it all together — and a goodbye in Bahia
- 1
Chegamos! Three pasts on the road
Perfeito, imperfeito and estava + -ndo, side by side — telling the story of the first days in Salvador.
Open lesson- Perfeito for finished events: Chegamos na segunda. Fomos ao Pelourinho.
- Imperfeito for the scene and for habits: Estava muito calor. A gente ia à praia todo dia.
- Estava + -ndo for an action in progress, often interrupted by a perfeito: Eu estava tirando uma foto quando o Bidu pulou na água.
- The irregular perfeitos: fui / foi / fomos / foram (ser and ir), tive, fiz, estive — plus spelling changes like fiquei and cheguei.
- For regular verbs, the nós form is the same in the present and the perfeito — let a time word decide.

Ser or estar? The tricky cases
Same adjective, different meaning; where things are; and estar com — all on a beach in Salvador.
Open lesson- Ser for what something is: identity, characteristics, days and times — and where an event takes place: A festa é no hotel.
- Estar for how or where something is now: feelings, changing conditions, where people and things are, results: O Bidu está deitado.
- Ficar (or ser) for where fixed places are: O Pelourinho fica no centro histórico.
- Some adjectives shift meaning: é chato (boring) vs está chato (being a pain); a banana está verde — unripe.
- Estar com + noun for how you feel: estar com fome, sede, calor, pressa, saudade.

Saudade at sunset: comparisons and pronouns
Compare places and people, use me, te and a gente the way Brazilians do — and find the words for missing someone.
Open lesson- Compare with mais / menos … (do) que and tão … quanto: tão bonita quanto o Porto da Barra.
- Melhor and pior replace mais bom and mais ruim; grande and pequeno compare as maior and menor.
- In speech, object pronouns go before the verb: A Luana me abraçou. Eu te ligo. With vou + infinitive, between the two: Vou te visitar.
- Te pairs with você; after a preposition, me becomes mim: para mim.
- Saudade: estou com saudade de você, vou sentir saudade da Bahia, sentir falta de, matar a saudade.

Até logo: looking back, looking ahead
Past, present and future in a single goodbye — and how Brazilians say farewell without saying adeus.
Open lesson- A finished period seen as a whole takes the perfeito: Foi um ano inesquecível.
- How things used to be takes the imperfeito: Eu não falava português.
- Plans and promises use ir + infinitive: Eu prometo que vou voltar.
- Foi is both ser and ir: Foi incrível (was), Ela foi embora (left).
- Brazilian goodbyes: tchau, até logo, até a próxima, boa viagem, se cuida, manda notícias.
- Adeus sounds final — between friends, it's até logo.
