Ser or estar — the rule of thumb

You've used both verbs since your very first conversation, and the rule of thumb still holds: ser says what something is; estar says how or where it is right now.

ser estar
identity, origin, profession — Ela é baiana. feelings and states — Estou cansada.
characteristics — O hotel é pequeno. conditions that can change — O mar está calmo hoje.
days, dates and times — Hoje é quinta-feira. São três horas. where people and movable things are — O Bidu está na areia.
where an event takes place — A festa é no hotel. the result of an action — A loja está fechada. O Bidu está deitado.

For buildings and places that never move, Brazilians usually say ficar — or simply ser: O Pelourinho fica no centro histórico. A farmácia é ali na esquina.
