The do is optional: mais quente que is just as correct.

Four adjectives have their own forms. Bom becomes melhor and ruim becomes pior — not mais bom or mais ruim. And grande and pequeno compare as maior and menor:

• O acarajé daqui é melhor do que o do Rio. — The acarajé here is better than the one in Rio.
• O Bidu está mais feliz do que nunca. — Bidu is happier than ever.
