The Past

Pretérito Perfeito — telling what happened

  1. 1

Falei, comi, abri: the regular past

The pretérito perfeito — one past tense for “I spoke” and “I have spoken”.

    • The pretérito perfeito tells what happened: Ontem eu falei com a Luana.
    • Endings: -ar → -ei, -ou, -amos, -aram; -er → -i, -eu, -emos, -eram; -ir → -i, -iu, -imos, -iram.
    • The nós form is the same as the present — context tells you the tense.
    • One tense, two English ones: comi = I ate or I have eaten.
    • Já (already, yet) and ainda não (not yet); short answers echo the verb: Gostei!

    • Como foi…? — How was…? Como foi o fim de semana?
    • Fazer: fiz, fez, fizemos, fizeram. Ter: tive, teve, tivemos, tiveram. Estar: estive, esteve, estivemos, estiveram.

    Pude, quis, disse, soube

Four more irregular pasts — and how Brazilians turn a day at the beach into a story.

    • Poder: pude, pôde, pudemos, puderam — the circumflex on pôde marks the past.
    • Querer: quis, quisemos, quiseram; dizer: disse, dissemos, disseram; saber: soube, soubemos, souberam — eu and ele share one form.
    • Não pude = I couldn't; não quis = I didn't want to, I refused.
    • Soube = found out: Soube ontem.
    • Tell it like a Brazilian: Você não sabe o que aconteceu!, aí…, do nada… — and listen with Sério? Não acredito! E aí?

A viagem de fim de semana

Last week, two days ago, first… then… — and Marcos finally tells the story of his mountain trip.

    • Time words: ontem, anteontem, na semana passada, no mês passado, no ano passado.
    • Há + time = ago: há dois dias — in speech also faz dois dias.
    • Spelling changes in the eu form only: fiquei, cheguei, joguei, comecei, almocei.
    • Sair: saí, saiu, saímos, saíram; ver: vi, viu, vimos, viram.
