The pretérito perfeito
To say what happened — an action finished at some point in the past — Portuguese uses the pretérito perfeito: Ontem eu falei com a minha mãe. (Yesterday I spoke to my mum.)
Regular verbs work just like the present: drop the -ar, -er or -ir and add the past endings.
| Pronoun | Falar | Comer | Abrir |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | falei | comi | abri |
| você / ele / ela | falou | comeu | abriu |
| nós | falamos | comemos | abrimos |
| vocês / eles / elas | falaram | comeram | abriram |
One Portuguese tense covers two English ones: comi can be I ate or I have eaten.
