The Conditional Tense

The conditional is the easiest tense in Portuguese. Take the whole infinitive and add -ia, -ia, -íamos, -iam. That's it. No stem changes for regular verbs.

• falar → falaria, falaria, falaríamos, falariam
• comer → comeria, comeria, comeríamos, comeriam
• partir → partiria, partiria, partiríamos, partiriam

Conjugate

The conditional has two main jobs

Job 1: Hypothetical result. "Eu compraria um carro." — "I would buy a car (if…)."

Job 2: Politeness. "Você poderia me ajudar?" — "Could you help me?" Softer than "você pode".
