Fazer & Ir

Two of the most-used verbs in Portuguese — and both are irregular. Learn them as a pair: you'll catch yourself reaching for one of them every other sentence.
| Pronoun | Fazer (to do/make) | Ir (to go) |
|---|---|---|
| Eu | faço | vou |
| Você / Ele / Ela | faz | vai |
| Nós | fazemos | vamos |
| Vocês / Eles / Elas | fazem | vão |
Fazer covers both English "to do" and "to make" — fazer um bolo (make a cake), fazer exercício (do exercise). Ir is the workhorse of motion: ir ao mercado, ir para casa, ir embora (to leave).
