Fazer & Ir

Fazer & Ir

Two of the most-used verbs in Portuguese — and both are irregular. Learn them as a pair: you'll catch yourself reaching for one of them every other sentence.

Pronoun Fazer (to do/make) Ir (to go)
Eu faço vou
Você / Ele / Ela faz vai
Nós fazemos vamos
Vocês / Eles / Elas fazem vão

Fazer covers both English "to do" and "to make" — fazer um bolo (make a cake), fazer exercício (do exercise). Ir is the workhorse of motion: ir ao mercado, ir para casa, ir embora (to leave).
