Telling Time
To tell the time you need three building blocks: a form of ser, a number, and (for the half / quarter) the right preposition.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| É uma hora | It's one o'clock. (Singular only at one.) |
| São duas horas | It's two o'clock. (Plural for everything from 2 on.) |
| São três e meia | It's half past three. |
| São quatro e quinze | It's quarter past four. |
| São cinco para as seis | It's five (minutes) to six. |
| É meio-dia / É meia-noite | It's noon / midnight. |
Notice that 12:00 noon and 12:00 midnight have their own words and use the singular é.
