Masculine or Feminine?
Every Brazilian Portuguese noun is either masculine or feminine. The article you put in front (o for masculine, a for feminine) has to agree.
A simple rule works most of the time:
- Words ending in -o are usually masculine: o livro, o carro, o filho
- Words ending in -a are usually feminine: a casa, a porta, a filha
- Words ending in -ção, -dade, -gem are feminine: a estação, a verdade, a viagem
But there are exceptions you'll meet often. Pick the right article for each word.
