Months, Seasons and Dates
To plan a trip you need dates — and dates need months and seasons. Note this: in Italian, months and seasons are written in lowercase, unlike in English.
The twelve months (i mesi)
| Italian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| gennaio | jen-NA-yo | January |
| febbraio | feb-BRA-yo | February |
| marzo | MAR-tso | March |
| aprile | a-PREE-le | April |
| maggio | MAD-jo | May |
| giugno | JOO-nyo | June |
| luglio | LOO-lyo | July |
| agosto | a-GOS-to | August |
| settembre | set-TEM-bre | September |
| ottobre | ot-TO-bre | October |
| novembre | no-VEM-bre | November |
| dicembre | di-CHEM-bre | December |
The four seasons (le stagioni)
| Italian | Pronunciation | English | Months |
|---|---|---|---|
| la primavera | pri-ma-VE-ra | spring | mar–jun |
| l'estate | e-STA-te | summer | jun–sep |
| l'autunno | au-TUN-no | autumn | sep–dec |
| l'inverno | in-VER-no | winter | dec–mar |
Date format: il [number] [month]. "Il ventiquattro giugno" — "The 24th of June." Unlike in English, there is no di ("of") in between. Only the first day of the month takes the ordinal number: il primo maggio (the 1st of May).
