Parler, habiter, aimer: the -er pattern
One set of endings for the biggest family of French verbs — and most of them are silent.
Open lesson- Regular -er verbs: drop the -er, add -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent.
- parler (speak), habiter (live), aimer (like, love), travailler (work) — and thousands more.
- -e, -es, -e, -ent are silent: il parle and ils parlent sound the same.
- J' before a vowel sound: j'habite, j'aime.
- Negatives wrap the verb: Je ne parle pas allemand. Il n'habite pas ici.
- On takes the il / elle form: on parle, on habite.

Three ways to ask a question
Ask yes/no questions from casual to formal — and answer with oui, non or si.
Open lesson- Three ways to ask: intonation (Tu parles français ?), est-ce que (Est-ce que tu parles français ?), inversion (Parlez-vous français ?).
- Intonation is the everyday way; inversion sounds formal.
- Est-ce que → est-ce qu' before a vowel: Est-ce qu'elle habite ici ?
- No helper do: Do you like…? is just Tu aimes… ?
- Si = yes when contradicting a negative: Tu n'aimes pas le café ? — Si !

Places in town, and where they are
The bakery, the pharmacy, the station — and the little words for next to, near and opposite.
Open lesson- Places: la rue, la boulangerie, la pharmacie, la librairie, le parc, le marché, la gare, le musée.
- La librairie is a bookshop; a library is la bibliothèque.
- Où est… ? — C'est ici. C'est là-bas.
- Location phrases end in de: à côté de, près de, loin de, en face de.
- de + le → du, de + les → des; de la and de l' don't change.
- à + le → au, à + les → aux: au café, but à la gare.

Asking the way
Left, right, straight on — and Marina's hunt for a bookshop in central Paris.
Open lesson- à droite (right), à gauche (left), tout droit (straight on) — droite sounds its t, droit doesn't.
- Directions use the vous form without the pronoun: Tournez… Continuez… Prenez…
- puis links the steps: Continuez tout droit, puis tournez à gauche.
- Ask with Excusez-moi… Je cherche… — chercher needs no for.
- C'est loin ? — C'est à cinq minutes à pied.
