Three ways to ask
French has three ways to turn a statement into a yes/no question, from casual to formal:
| Method | Example — “Do you speak French?” |
|---|---|
| 1. Intonation — just raise your voice at the end | Tu parles français ? |
| 2. Est-ce que at the front | Est-ce que tu parles français ? |
| 3. Inversion — verb first, then the pronoun, joined by a hyphen | Parlez-vous français ? |
- Intonation is by far the most common in conversation.
- Est-ce que is neutral and always safe. Before a vowel it becomes est-ce qu': Est-ce qu'elle habite ici ?
- Inversion sounds formal. You'll mostly meet it in writing and in set phrases such as Comment allez-vous ? and Parlez-vous anglais ?
There's no helper like English do: Do you like…? is simply Tu aimes… ?
