Expressing preferences — aimer, adorer, détester

To talk about likes and dislikes, French uses a simple scale of verbs — aimer (to like), adorer (to love), détester (to hate) and préférer (to prefer). These are followed either by a noun with the definite article or directly by an infinitive.
