Tämä, tuo, se: this one, that one
The demonstratives and their endings — tätä, tämän, tässä — and a present for Mum in Boston.
Open lesson- tämä (this), tuo (that, over there), se (it / that, near you or already mentioned); plural nämä, nuo, ne.
- They take endings like nouns: tämän / tätä / tässä, tuon / tuota / tuossa, sen / sitä / siinä.
- The noun matches: Otan tämän paidan. Katso tätä takkia!
- Voinko auttaa? — Katselen vain, kiitos.
- Otan tämän. — I'll take this one.

Clothes, colours, sizes and prices over a hundred — Marina gets kitted out for Lapland.
Open lesson- Clothes: paita, villapaita, housut, mekko, takki, kengät, sukat, pipo, hanskat.
- Pairs are plural, like trousers: housut, kengät, sukat.
- Colours in -nen become -se- / -s-: punaisen, punaista — and match their noun.
- Mikä koko? Voinko sovittaa tätä? Se sopii sinulle!
- Over a hundred: satakaksikymmentä (120), kaksisataa (200).

Halvempi kuin: comparing
Bigger, cheaper, the best: comparatives in -mpi, superlatives in -in, and kuin for “than”.
Open lesson- Comparative -mpi, than = kuin: halvempi kuin, isompi kuin.
- Two-syllable words in -a / -ä → -empi (vanhempi, halvempi); -is → -iimpi (kalliimpi).
- Superlative -in: isoin, halvin, kallein, kaunein.
- hyvä → parempi → paras; as … as = yhtä … kuin.
- Kumpi? — which (of two)?

Kirpputorilla: at the flea market
Bargain hunting the Finnish way — this one, that one, cheaper, more beautiful — and a blue jumper for Lapland.
Open lesson- Flea-market words: kirpputori / kirppis, käytetty, edullinen, käteinen.
- Edullinen is the polite cheap; halpa can sound cheap and nasty.
- Sopia + -lle: Se sopii sinulle! — and Sopii! = Deal!
- Point and compare: Tämä on kaunis — tuo on kauniimpi. Se on halvempi kuin tämä.
- Voinko sovittaa sitä? — Totta kai!
