Der, Die, or Das?
Every German noun has a grammatical gender: masculine (der), feminine (die), or neuter (das). The bad news: it's not always logical (a girl, das Mädchen, is neuter!). The good news: there are useful patterns.
| Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The | der Mann | die Frau | das Kind | die Kinder |
| A/An | ein Mann | eine Frau | ein Kind | — |
Helpful patterns:
- Nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tion are almost always feminine: die Zeitung, die Freiheit.
- Diminutives in -chen and -lein are always neuter: das Mädchen, das Brötchen.
- All nouns are capitalised in German: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Buch.
