Modals for the Present

Modale Certezza Esempio
must quasi 100% (positivo) He must be at home — his car is here.
can't quasi 100% (negativo) She can't be British — she has no accent.
should / ought to atteso, "dovrebbe" The bus should be here by now.
will previsto, sicuro That will be the postman.
could possibile He could still be at work.
might / may forse (~50%) It might rain later.

must deduttivo ≠ must di obbligo

  • You must wear a helmet here. — Devi indossare un casco qui (obbligo)
  • You must be tired after that flight.
