Irregular Participles

The most common verbs have — as in English — an irregular past participle. Grit your teeth and get through it: there aren't many, but you'll need them all the time.

Most of these verbs take avere (ho fatto, ho letto, ho preso). But essere and venire — as verbs of state and motion — take the auxiliary essere, and their participle agrees with the subject: sono stato / stata, sono venuto / venuta.
