The Passato Prossimo

The passato prossimo is the past tense you reach for to say "I spoke", "I went", "I ate". You build it just like the English present perfect: present tense of avere or essere + the past participle of the main verb.

The regular participles follow the verb group:

Ending Participle Example
-are -ato parlare → parlato
-ere -uto credere → creduto
-ire -ito dormire → dormito

With avere (most verbs)

Avere or essere?

Most verbs take avere. But verbs of motion and change of state (andare, venire, partire, arrivare, tornare, entrare, uscire, restare, nascere, morire) as well as all reflexive verbs take essere.

With essere, the participle agrees with the subject — like an adjective:

Subject Example
masculine sg. Marco è andato.
feminine sg. Marina è andata.
masculine pl. I ragazzi sono andati.
feminine pl. Le ragazze sono andate.
