Verbi Modali di Speculazione
Must, might, could per fare ipotesi
- 1
Must e can't: dedurre al presente
Quando *must* non è un obbligo: *You must be tired*, *That can't be Marcos* — e perché *mustn't* non serve per dedurre.
Abrir lição- Must serve per obbligare (You must wear a helmet) e per dedurre (You must be tired); decide il contesto.
- Deduzione quasi sicura: must be — It must be cold outside. Dove l'italiano usa il futuro (sarà stanca), l'inglese usa must.
- Il contrario è can't be — That can't be Marcos. Mustn't è un divieto, mai una deduzione.
- Quello che sta succedendo adesso: must be + -ing — She must be working late.
- Quando conosci qualcuno: You must be Marina! — Tu devi essere Marina!
- 2
Might, may, could: forse sì, forse no
Per ciò che è possibile ma non sicuro: *It might rain*, *She may be late* — e come *should* e *will* completano la scala.
Abrir lição- Might, may, could + infinito: ciò che è possibile — She might be stuck on the Tube.
- Might not / may not = forse no; can't / couldn't = impossibile.
- In una frase affermativa, una possibilità concreta non va con can: It might rain, non It can rain (anche se diciamo può piovere).
- Should: il prevedibile — She should be here by now.
- Will ('ll): supposizione sicura, come il nostro futuro di probabilità — That'll be Luana. (Sarà Luana.)
- Maybe (forse) è una parola; may be sono due: She may be lost.
- 3
Must have, can't have: dedurre il passato
Modale + *have* + participio per trarre conclusioni su ciò che è già successo: *She must have missed the train*, *It can't have been Bidu*.
Abrir lição- Per dedurre sul passato: modale + have + participio.
- must have (sicuramente sì) — She must have missed the train.
- might / may / could have (forse sì) — He might have forgotten.
- can't / couldn't have (sicuramente no) — It can't have been Bidu.
- Had to è un obbligo (è dovuto andare via); per dedurre, must have.
- Sempre have, anche dove l'italiano usa essere. Si pronuncia must've, ma si scrive must have: mai must of.
- 4
Should have, could have: quello che poteva essere
Rimpianti, rimproveri e strade non prese: *I should have called*, *You could have told me!*
Abrir lição- should have + participio: la cosa giusta non fatta — I should have called you. (Avrei dovuto chiamarti.)
- shouldn't have: ciò che è stato fatto e non andava — You shouldn't have eaten the whole cake.
- could have: un'opzione non presa, o un rimprovero — You could have told me!
- would have: quello che sarebbe successo — I'd have been bored.
- Il passato va sul verbo principale, non sul modale: should have called, non would have had to call.
- Should have (non è successo) non è must have (sicuramente è successo). Al lavoro, ammorbidisci: It would have been helpful to know earlier.
