Piacere & Preferire

Two verbs you'll need in any conversation about what you like — and they work completely differently.

Piacere works backwards: not "I like X", but "X is pleasing to me". What is the subject in English (I) becomes the indirect object in Italian (mi). What is the object in English (the coffee) becomes the subject — and the verb agrees with it.

Mi piace il caffè.	Coffee is pleasing to me.
Mi piacciono i libri.	Books are pleasing to me. (plural subject → piacciono!)
Ti piace il cinema.	The cinema is pleasing to you.
A Marina piace ballare.	Dancing is pleasing to Marina.

Only piace (singular) or piacciono (plural) — the verb follows the thing that is liked, not the person. Before an infinitive (ballare, leggere) you always use the singular piace.

Preferire, on the other hand, works normally — like "to prefer". But it's an -isc- verb: in four of its forms an -isc- slots in between the stem and the ending.
