Possessives

Possessives say who something belongs to. In Italian they agree with the thing that is possessed — not with the owner. And they normally come with the article: il mio libro, la mia casa.

The most important rule: before single, unmodified family members the article drops: mia madre, mio padre, tuo fratello, sua sorella. But: with loro (il loro padre), in the plural (i miei fratelli) or with a diminutive (la mia mamma) the article stays.
