Important Verbs

Hacer, ir, poder, querer — and the object pronouns

  1. 1

Hacer, ir, querer: doing, going, wanting

Three irregular verbs you'll use in almost every conversation — and how to ask someone what they want to do.

    • hacer (to do, to make): hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen — hacer yoga, hacer la compra.
    • ir (to go): voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van — irregular all the way through.
    • querer (to want): quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren — e → ie except nosotros and vosotros.
    • Places take a, and a + el → al: voy al cine, voy a la playa, voy a casa.
    • After querer the next verb stays in the infinitive: ¿Qué quieres hacer?
    • ¡Vamos! — Let's go!

Poder, saber, decir: can, know, say

Two Spanish verbs for “can”, how to report what people say — and why a clear no is fine in Spain.

    • poder: puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden; saber: sé, sabes, sabe…; decir: digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen.
    • Saber + infinitive = a learned skill (sé nadar); poder + infinitive = able or allowed right now (hoy no puedo).
    • Saber a fact (No sé), but conocer a person or a place — with the personal a for people: Conozco a Marcos.
    • Decir que… — the que always stays. ¿Cómo se dice…? and ¿Qué significa…? are a learner's best friends.
    • In Spain a clear No puedo plus a reason is a friendly answer, not a rude one.

Me, te, lo, la: object pronouns

Stop repeating names — him, her, it and them in Spanish, plus the le you'll hear all over Madrid.

    • Object pronouns go before the conjugated verb: Luana me ayuda. With an infinitive they can also go on the end: ¿Puedes ayudarme?
    • me, te, lo / la, nos, os, los / las — lo and la are also it.
    • In Madrid you'll often hear le for him: Le conozco = Lo conozco.
    • To someone: le / les — Le digo la verdad, Les escribo a mis padres.
    • Te quiero — the everyday Spanish I love you.

    Haciendo planes: making plans

Say what you're going to do, invite, accept, turn down and fix a time — then plan a Saturday with Marina and Luana.

    • Ir a + infinitive = going to: Voy a estudiar. ¿Qué vas a hacer?
    • Fix a plan with ¿Qué día? ¿A qué hora? ¿Dónde? — and quedar: ¿Quedamos a las cinco?
    • Invite with ¿Quieres…? or ¿Te apetece…?; accept with ¡Vale! or ¡Hecho!
    • Decline with No puedo plus a reason — ¡Otro día!
    • Conmigo = with me, contigo = with you; venir: vengo, vienes, viene…
