Three verbs you can't avoid
Some of the most frequent verbs in Spanish don't follow the regular patterns. Here are three of them in full:
| Pronoun | Hacer (to do, to make) | Ir (to go) | Querer (to want) |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hago | voy | quiero |
| tú | haces | vas | quieres |
| él / ella / usted | hace | va | quiere |
| nosotros | hacemos | vamos | queremos |
| vosotros | hacéis | vais | queréis |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hacen | van | quieren |
The forms in bold are the irregular ones.
- Hacer only misbehaves once: hago. Everything else takes the regular -er endings.
- Querer changes its e to ie whenever the stress falls on the stem — every form except nosotros and vosotros.
- Ir is irregular all the way through. Learn it as a little chant: voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van.
