The Future, Without a Future Tense

In English you say "I am going to travel" or "I will travel". In German, the most natural option is just the present tense + a time expression:

  • Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg. — Tomorrow I'm going to Hamburg.
  • Nächstes Jahr reisen wir nach Italien. — Next year we're travelling to Italy.
  • Heute Abend koche ich Pasta. — Tonight I'm cooking pasta.

A more formal future exists — werden + infinitive — used for emphasis, predictions, or in writing:

  • Ich werde dich nie vergessen. — I will never forget you.
