I Quattro Conditionals
Zero, First, Second e Third Conditional
- 1
If it rains…: zero e first conditional
Verità generali e futuri probabili con if, e perché dopo if e when non ci va will.
Abrir lección- Zero: if + presente, presente — verità generali: If you heat ice, it melts.
- First: if + presente, will + infinito — futuro probabile: If it rains, I'll stay at home.
- Nella condizione niente will: If it rains, non If it will rain.
- Lo stesso con when, as soon as, until, before: When I arrive (non when I will arrive, anche se in italiano dici quando arriverò).
- Nell'altra metà va bene anche might o un imperativo: If she calls, tell her I'm in a meeting.
- 2
If I were you…: il second conditional
Se avessi, se fossi, se potessi: ipotesi sul presente e sul futuro con if + past e would.
Abrir lección- Second conditional: if + past simple, would + infinito — situazioni immaginarie o poco probabili.
- If I had more time, I'd travel more. — Se avessi più tempo, viaggerei di più.
- Con be: were per tutti — If I were you, I'd take the job.
- Nella condizione niente would: If I had…, non If I would have… (è il nostro se avrei).
- If I win (possibile: first) ≠ If I won (immaginato: second).
- could = potrei: If I had a car, I could visit you.
- 3
If I'd known…: il third conditional
Il passato che non è stato: had + participio e would have + participio, e tutto quello che sarebbe cambiato.
Abrir lección- Third conditional: if + had + participio, would have + participio — il passato che non è stato.
- If I had known, I would have come earlier. — Se l'avessi saputo, sarei venuto prima.
- Sempre have, anche dove l'italiano usa essere: I would have come (sarei venuto).
- Participi irregolari chiave: gone, known, met, taken, seen, been, got.
- Contrazioni: If I'd known, I'd have come — 'd = had (+ participio) o would (+ infinito).
- Nella condizione niente would: non If I would have known.

Tutti e quattro insieme: unless, in case e i consigli di Luana
Come scegliere tra i quattro conditionals, e tre espressioni che non sono if: unless, as long as e in case.
Abrir lección- Scegli il conditional in base al momento e a quanto è reale: zero (sempre), first (possibile), second (immaginato, ora), third (immaginato, nel passato).
- unless = if… not, senza un altro not: Unless you hurry, you'll be late.
- as long as = purché: You can borrow it as long as you bring it back.
- in case = per precauzione, caso mai — non se: Take an umbrella in case it rains.
- Dopo if, unless, as long as e in case, presente per parlare del futuro.
- If I were you, I'd…: la formula per dare consigli.
