Se-Clauses and the Unreal

When you want to say "If I had time, I would travel more", you need two building blocks: the congiuntivo imperfetto in the se part and the condizionale in the result. This combination is the heart of the unreal conditional sentence (the periodo ipotetico).

The condizionale (the result)

The condizionale takes the same stem as the future, plus the endings -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero.

The same irregular stems as in the future: essere → sarei, avere → avrei, andare → andrei, fare → farei, volere → vorrei, potere → potrei, dovere → dovrei.

The congiuntivo imperfetto (the se part)

The "if I had…" tense. Forming it: -are → -assi, -ere → -essi, -ire → -issi.

Se io avessi tempo, viaggerei di più. "If I had time, I would travel more."
