Forms of the Congiuntivo

Until now everything you've said was real (the indicativo). The congiuntivo opens another door: things you wish for, doubt or suppose.

Forming it is a vowel swap: -are verbs change to -i, and -ere and -ire verbs change to -a. Because the three singular forms are identical, you often put the pronoun in front.

The trick to memorise the whole system: -are → -i, -ere / -ire → -a. This one swap is almost the entire pattern. The -isc verbs keep their -isc-: che io capisca, che loro capiscano.

Five irregular forms come up constantly in real conversation. Learn them by heart like personal pronouns — in the singular all three persons are the same.
