The Imperfetto

The imperfetto is the past tense for things that were ongoing or happened again and again: "I used to live there", "it was raining", "she always smiled".

It's wonderfully regular: take the stem and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano (onto the theme vowel a / e / i).

Only a few verbs are irregular here — and they're all worth memorising. Essere is the most important:

There are also two verbs with a hidden stem: fare → facevo (facevi, faceva …) and dire → dicevo (dicevi, diceva …). Bere belongs here too: bevevo.

Examples:

• Quando ero bambino, giocavo in piazza. — When I was a child, I used to play in the square. (imperfetto — habit)
• Faceva sempre freddo a dicembre. — In December it was always cold. (imperfetto — description)
