Potere, Volere, Sapere

Three verbs that look small but carry a lot: potere (can/may), volere (to want) and sapere (to know — facts and learned skills). All three are irregular.

The trick: sapere is for facts and learned skills (so nuotare — I can swim, in the sense of "I have learned how"). Potere is for momentary possibility or permission (oggi non posso nuotare, fa freddo — today I can't swim, it's cold).
