Regular -ere and -ire Verbs

You already know the -are pattern. Alongside the -are verbs there are two more families: those ending in -ere and -ire. They work similarly — drop the ending, add a new one.

	prendere (to take)	leggere (to read)	dormire (to sleep)
Io	prendo	leggo	dormo

Lui / Lei	prende	legge	dorme
Noi	prendiamo	leggiamo	dormiamo
Voi	prendete	leggete	dormite
Loro	prendono	leggono	dormono

The patterns at a glance:

• -ere verbs: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ete, -ono
• -ire verbs: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono

They're almost identical — the only difference is in the voi form (-ete vs. -ite).

Special case — the -isc- verbs: Many -ire verbs (e.g. capire "to understand", finire "to finish", preferire "to prefer") insert an -isc- in some forms: capisco, capisci, capisce, capiamo, capite, capiscono. Only the noi and voi forms stay without -isc-.
