Comparing Things
To compare two things in German, you stick -er onto the adjective and follow it with als (than):
- klein → kleiner als… (smaller than…)
- schön → schöner als… (more beautiful than…)
There's no separate word "more" — German just changes the adjective.
Irregular comparatives you'll meet often:
| Adjective | Comparative | English |
|---|---|---|
| gut | besser | good → better |
| viel | mehr | much → more |
| groß | größer | big → bigger |
| hoch | höher | high → higher |
| gern | lieber | gladly → preferably |
For as… as, German uses so… wie: Marina ist so groß wie Luana.
