The Past

The passato prossimo and time expressions

  1. 1

Ho parlato: the past with avere

The passato prossimo — the everyday Italian past — built with avere and a participle: what you did yesterday and last night.

    • The passato prossimo = present of avere + participle: ho parlato, hai creduto, ha dormito.
    • Participles: -are → -ato, -ere → -uto, -ire → -ito.
    • One form, two English tenses: ho mangiato = I ate / I have eaten.
    • Non goes first; già, mai, ancora, sempre go between: non ho ancora finito.
    • Time words: ieri, ieri sera, l'altro ieri, stamattina.

Sono andata: the past with essere

Going, coming, leaving and getting up take essere — and then the participle agrees: andato, andata, andati, andate.

    • Movement and change of state take essere: andare, venire, partire, arrivare, tornare, uscire, restare, nascere.
    • With essere the participle agrees: andato, andata, andati, andate; a mixed group → -i.
    • Reflexive verbs take essere too: mi sono alzata, ci siamo divertiti.
    • Essere and stare share stato: sono stata a Venezia.
    • Irregular participles to know: venuto, nato.

    Fatto, detto, visto: irregular participles

The participles that break the rules — fatto, visto, preso, letto — plus mi è piaciuto, and a free Sunday at the Uffizi.

    • Many common verbs have an irregular participle: fatto, detto, visto, letto, scritto, preso, messo, aperto, chiuso, bevuto.
    • They work like regular participles: ho fatto, hai visto, abbiamo preso.
    • Piacere takes essere and agrees with the thing liked: mi è piaciuto il film, mi è piaciuta la gita.
    • Plural things: mi sono piaciuti / piaciute.
    • Fare una foto — to take a photo; fare la fila — to queue.

    La gita sull'Appennino

Last week, two days ago, first… then… suddenly — and Marcos tells the story of his weekend in the mountains with Bidu.

    • Scorso agrees: il mese scorso, la settimana scorsa; lo scorso fine settimana.
    • Fa = ago, after the time: due giorni fa.
    • Tell it in order: prima… poi… dopo… all'improvviso… alla fine.
    • Correre: avere for the activity (ha corso), essere with a destination (è corso da Marcos); salire, scendere take essere unless they have an object.
    • A whole story in the passato prossimo mixes avere and essere: ho preparato… siamo usciti.
