The passato prossimo

To say what you did, Italian uses the passato prossimo: the present of avere + the past participle of the verb. Ieri ho parlato con mia madre. — Yesterday I spoke to my mum.

The participle of regular verbs: -are → -ato, -ere → -uto, -ire → -ito.

Pronoun Parlare Credere Dormire
io ho parlato ho creduto ho dormito
tu hai parlato hai creduto hai dormito
lui / lei ha parlato ha creduto ha dormito
noi abbiamo parlato abbiamo creduto abbiamo dormito
voi avete parlato avete creduto avete dormito
loro hanno parlato hanno creduto hanno dormito

Only avere changes; the participle stays the same. One Italian form covers two English ones: ho mangiato is both I ate and I have eaten.

Time words that go with it: ieri (yesterday), ieri sera (last night), l'altro ieri (the day before yesterday), stamattina (this morning).
