Object Pronouns

le, la, les, lui, leur

  1. 1

Le, la, les: it, him, her, them

Replace a noun with le, la or les — and put it where French wants it: before the verb.

    • Le, la, les replace a direct object: Je le regarde. Je la cherche. Je les mange.
    • They go before the verb — le and la become l' before a vowel: Je l'aime.
    • The French noun decides: la clé → la, even though English says it.
    • Negative: ne + pronoun + verb + pas — Je ne les trouve pas.
    • Me, te, nous, vous use the same slot: Marcos nous invite.

Lui, leur: to him, to her, to them

Talk, phone, give and write to people without repeating their names — and trust the French verb, not the English one.

    • Lui (to him / to her) and leur (to them) replace à + a person, before the verb: Je lui parle.
    • Typical verbs: parler à, téléphoner à, donner à, offrir à, écrire à, répondre à, dire à.
    • The French verb decides: téléphoner à → lui, but attendre, chercher, écouter, aider, remercier → le / la / les.
    • The pronoun leur never takes an s; the possessive does: Je leur donne leurs cadeaux.
    • Me, te, nous, vous cover both kinds: Tu me téléphones ?

Y and en: there, some, of it

Two tiny pronouns French uses all the time — y for places, en for “some” and quantities.

    • Y replaces à + a place, before the verb: Tu vas au marché ? — J'y vais.
    • En replaces de + a noun — some, any, of it, of them: Du café ? J'en prends.
    • With a number or quantity, en goes before the verb and the number after: J'en ai deux.
    • Negatives: Je n'y vais pas. Je n'en ai pas. Il n'y en a plus.
    • Chunks to keep: On y va ! — Il y en a. — Il n'y en a plus.

Where the pronoun goes: a gift for Luana

Pronouns with two verbs and in commands — then go gift shopping with Marina and Marcos.

    • One verb: the pronoun goes before it — Je le prends. Je ne le prends pas.
    • Two verbs: before the infinitive — Je vais le prendre. Je ne vais pas le prendre.
    • Positive commands put it after, with a hyphen: Prends-le ! Aide-moi ! Vas-y !
    • Negative commands put it back in front: Ne le prends pas !
    • Two pronouns together follow a fixed order: Je te le donne. Il y en a.
