With two verbs: before the infinitive

So far the pronoun has always gone straight before the verb: Je le prends. But when a sentence has two verbs — a conjugated verb plus an infinitive — the pronoun goes before the one it belongs to: the infinitive.

The commonest case is aller + infinitive, going to — you've already used it to order: Je vais prendre… (je vais, tu vas, il / elle / on va):

  • Je vais le prendre. — I'm going to take it.
  • *Luana va **l'*adorer. — Luana's going to love it.
  • On va lui téléphoner. — We're going to phone him.

In a negative, ne … pas wraps the conjugated verb, and the pronoun stays with the infinitive: Je ne vais pas le prendre. — I'm not going to take it.
