Plans & Travels

The future, dates and the words you need to travel

  1. 1

Voy a viajar: the everyday future

Ir a + infinitive — how Spanish talks about tonight, next week and next year.

    • The everyday future: ir (voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van) + a + infinitive — Voy a viajar.
    • In conversation it covers both going to and will; vamos a + infinitive can also mean let's.
    • No goes before ir: No voy a trabajar. And never drop the a.
    • Voy a la playa and voy a ir a la playa are both fine.
    • Time words: mañana, pasado mañana, la semana que viene, el año que viene, dentro de dos días.

Lunes, enero, verano: days, dates and seasons

The days of the week, the months, how to say a date — and why Madrid empties out in August.

    • Days: lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo — lower case and masculine.
    • el lunes — one particular Monday; los lunes — every Monday. Never en before a day.
    • Dates: el + number + de + month — el 17 de agosto; the 1st is el uno or el primero.
    • Written dates go day first: 03/07 is the 3rd of July.
    • Seasons: verano, otoño, invierno, primavera. Agosto is holiday month — Madrid empties out.

Billete, maleta, reserva: getting ready to go

Tickets, flights, suitcases and bookings — plus ya and todavía no, with the past Spain uses for ticking off a list.

    • Travel words: el billete, el vuelo, el aeropuerto, la maleta, el alojamiento — and an entrada for a show or a match.
    • Hacer la maleta — to pack; reservar — to book.
    • Done up to now? Spain uses the pretérito perfecto: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han + participle — he reservado.
    • Ya (already, yet) and todavía no (not yet): ¿Ya has comprado los billetes? — Todavía no.
    • A finished time (ayer, el lunes) takes the indefinido: Los compré ayer.

Será, habrá: the simple future and the forecast

The one-word future for promises, predictions and forecasts — and how to talk about the weather for a trip.

    • The one-word future = infinitive + -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án: viajaré, será, iremos, volverán.
    • It's the future of promises, predictions and forecasts; for everyday plans, ir a + infinitive is more common.
    • Short stems: haré, tendré, saldré, podré, sabré, diré — and habrá, there will be.
    • Weather has no it: va a hacer sol / calor / viento, va a llover.
    • El tiempo is both time and weather: ¿Qué tiempo hace?
