Opinions and Debates
Stating a view and the modal particles
- 1
Ich finde, dass…: saying what you think
Finden, glauben, meinen — dass with the verb at the end — and the ladder from a soft opinion to a firm one.
Open lesson- Finden gives a verdict (Ich finde den Film zu lang); glauben a belief; meinen a view in debate.
- Ask with Wie findest du …? or Was meinst du?
- After dass, the verb goes last: Ich glaube, dass sie recht hat. Without dass, normal order.
- Dass joins clauses; das is the article or a pronoun.
- Meiner Meinung nach, aus meiner Sicht, für mich + verb straight after: Meiner Meinung nach ist…
- Keine Ahnung hedges anything — among friends.
- 2
Stimmt, aber…: agreeing and disagreeing
From a soft “glaube schon” to “im Gegenteil!” — and how Germans disagree without slamming the door.
Open lesson- Agreeing, soft to strong: Glaube schon → Stimmt → Genau → Da hast du recht → Da bin ich ganz deiner Meinung.
- Recht haben — to be right; jemandem recht geben — to agree with someone.
- Deiner / Ihrer / anderer Meinung sein — the genitive does the work.
- Disagreeing, gentle to strong: Ich weiß nicht so recht → Ich sehe das anders → Da bin ich anderer Meinung → Im Gegenteil!
- Ja, ja, aber… — the ja is a nod, not agreement: wait for the aber.
- 3
Einerseits, andererseits: building an argument
The connectors that hold an argument together — and what each one does to the word order.
Open lesson- Und, aber, oder, denn, sondern join without changing the word order.
- Deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem, andererseits, allerdings take the first slot — the verb follows at once.
- Weil, obwohl, dass, wenn send the verb to the end.
- Zwar … aber grants a point and pushes back; einerseits … andererseits weighs two sides.
- Weil + verb at the end, denn + normal order — both mean because.
- 4
Ja, doch, halt, mal: the modal particles
The tiny words that carry a German sentence's tone — what they add, and where they sit.
Open lesson- Modalpartikeln add tone, not facts — and never open a sentence.
- ja — surprise or shared knowledge; doch — urging or surely; mal — a softer request.
- halt / eben — that's how it is; schon — reassurance; eigentlich — actually; wohl — probably.
- Doch! answers yes to a negative question: Kommst du nicht mit? — Doch!
- Don't translate them word for word: notice them, and they'll start turning up in your own German.
