Three kinds of connector
An argument needs joints. In German, each connector also decides the word order of what follows. There are three kinds:
| Kind | Connectors | Word order | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| joining words | und, aber, oder, denn, sondern | no change | Das Kino ist teuer, aber es ist ein Erlebnis. |
| adverbs | deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem, andererseits, allerdings | verb straight after | Das Kino ist teuer. Trotzdem gehe ich gern hin. |
| subordinating | weil, obwohl, dass, wenn | verb to the end | Ich gehe gern hin, obwohl es teuer ist. |
das Erlebnis — experience; hingehen — to go (there).
The adverbs fill the first slot of their sentence themselves — so the verb, which always wants second place, follows at once.
