Emails, meetings, and the formal register

  1. 1

O senhor, a senhora: choosing your register

Você or o senhor? Five ways to ask for the same thing — and the courteous conditional that runs through Brazilian working life.

    • Você is the default; o senhor / a senhora add respect — older or senior people, clients, first formal contact.
    • O senhor takes the você verb form; for your, do senhor / da senhora is clearest; don't pair it with te.
    • The conditional is the courtesy tool: poderia, gostaria de, seria possível, teria.
    • Office verbs: enviar / encaminhar, solicitar, verificar, entrar em contato com, informar.
    • Pode me chamar de você ends the formality; on the phone, É ela / É ele means Speaking.
