Five parts, every time
A Brazilian business email follows a predictable skeleton. Learn the frame and you only have to write the middle.
| Part | What goes in it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Assunto | the subject line — short and specific | Confirmação — entrevista de terça-feira |
| Saudação | the greeting | Prezada Dra. Helena, · Prezado Sr. Almeida, · Prezados, (a group) · Cara Paula, (warmer) |
| Abertura | an opening line | Espero que esteja bem. · Conforme conversamos por telefone, … |
| Corpo | the message itself | |
| Fechamento | the close and sign-off | Fico à disposição para qualquer esclarecimento. · Aguardo o seu retorno. · Atenciosamente, |
- Prezado (dear) agrees: Prezado for a man, Prezada for a woman, Prezados for a group.
- Fico à disposição para qualquer esclarecimento — I'm happy to clarify anything (literally I remain at your disposal for any clarification).
- Aguardo o seu retorno — I look forward to hearing from you.
- Atenciosamente is the all-purpose formal sign-off. Cordialmente is an alternative; Abraços is for colleagues you already know.
