Este, Esse, Aquele

English has this and that. Portuguese has three: how far is the thing from you, and from the listener?

Form	Distance	Example
este / esta	near me	Este vestido aqui (this dress here)
esse / essa	near you	Esse vestido aí (that dress there, by you)
aquele / aquela	far from both	Aquele vestido lá (that dress over there)

The plural just adds -s: estes, esses, aqueles (m); estas, essas, aquelas (f). Memorise the partner words too — aqui (here), aí (there, near you), lá (over there).
