Expressing Opinions
An Italian opinion sentence almost always begins with a softener. Here is the whole ladder — from the gentlest to the most assertive opener:
| Opener | Strength | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Penso che… | gentle | I think that… |
| Direi che… | gentle-soft | I would say that… |
| Secondo me… | neutral | In my opinion… |
| Dal mio punto di vista… | neutral-firm | From my point of view… |
| Per me,… | personal-firm | For me… |
| Sinceramente,… | honest-firm | Honestly… |
| Sono sicuro/a che… | assertive | I'm sure that… |
| Senza alcun dubbio… | most assertive | Without any doubt… |
Important on mood: Penso che requires the subjunctive (penso che sia vero); secondo me takes the indicative (secondo me è vero).
