Irregular Comparatives

Four adjectives refuse to follow the regular "più [adj]" pattern. They have their own comparative forms — and you'll hear all four every day.

buono (good)	migliore	better
cattivo (bad)	peggiore	worse
grande (big)	maggiore	bigger (or older)
piccolo (small)	minore	smaller (or younger)

These work just like in English: "Questo film è migliore" — "This film is better." "Più buono" isn't exactly wrong, but it sounds childish; in a comparison you use migliore.

In a comparison, di (than) follows: "migliore di quello" — better than that one. "Mio fratello è maggiore di me" — my brother is older than me.

Watch out — adverbs: bene (well) and male (badly) have their own comparatives, which don't carry an -e: bene → meglio (better), male → peggio (worse). "Cucino meglio di te" — "I cook better than you."
