The Six Local Cases

Where English uses six little words — in, out of, into, at, from, onto — Finnish uses six endings. They come in two families of three: the inner set (inside something) and the outer set (on a surface or near something).

The six endings

Think of it as a grid: where? (-ssa, -lla), from where? (-sta, -lta), to where? (-Vn, -lle). The inner set is for being inside — rooms, cities, countries: Helsingissä (in Helsinki), Suomessa (in Finland). The outer set is for surfaces and many open places: torilla (at the market), työssä (at work).
