The Six Modal Verbs

The six German modal verbs and what they mean:

• können — can / be able
• wollen — want
• müssen — must / have to
• sollen — should / am supposed to
• dürfen — may / am allowed to
• mögen — like (usually as möchten = would like)

They all share two oddities:

1. In the present, ich and er/sie/es have the same form (no -t on third person!).
2. The main verb in the sentence goes to the end in the infinitive.
