Hypotheticals & The Conditional

What if I had… I would…

  1. 1

Eu gostaria, você poderia: the conditional

The “would” tense — for polite requests at work and for saying what you'd do.

    • The conditional is the infinitive + -ia, -íamos, -iam: falaria, comeríamos, abririam.
    • Only three short stems: diria, faria, traria.
    • Polite requests: gostaria de, poderia, seria possível, você se importaria de.
    • It also imagines: Eu não faria isso. No seu lugar, eu aceitaria.
    • In relaxed speech the imperfect does the same job: Eu queria um café.
    • In Brazil, eu gostava means I used to like — ask with queria or gostaria.

    Se eu fosse você: if-sentences

The imperfect subjunctive — built from the past tense — and the classic “if I were…, I would…”.

    • Imagined situations: se + imperfect subjunctive, then the conditional: Se eu tivesse tempo, eu viajaria.
    • Form it from the eles preterite: drop -ram, add -sse: falaram → falasse.
    • Irregular stems come free: fosse, tivesse, estivesse, fizesse, pudesse, soubesse.
    • The nós form takes an accent: falássemos, tivéssemos.
    • Se chover is a real possibility; se chovesse is imagined.
    • Advice in one phrase: Se eu fosse você…

Quem me dera: hypotheticals as Brazilians say them

The everyday spoken “would”, wishes for things out of reach, and how to say “I wish you'd…”.

    • In speech the imperfect often replaces the conditional: Se eu tivesse dinheiro, eu viajava.
    • Ia + infinitive is the everyday would: eu ia nadar todo dia.
    • The se half stays in the imperfect subjunctive — se eu tinha means whenever I had.
    • Quem me dera for wishes out of reach: Quem me dera ter férias!
    • Eu queria que / gostaria que + imperfect subjunctive: Eu queria que você ficasse.
    • Tomara que + present subjunctive is for hopes that may come true.

Como se fosse ontem: como se and e se…?

Say how things seem with como se, make gentle suggestions with e se…? — and look back on how far Marina has come.

    • Como se + imperfect subjunctive: Ele fala como se fosse carioca.
    • Lembro como se fosse ontem — I remember it as if it were yesterday.
    • E se + imperfect subjunctive makes a gentle suggestion: E se a gente pedisse uma pizza?
    • With the future subjunctive, e se can voice a real worry: E se chover?
    • After a past or conditional trigger, the subjunctive moves into the past: Ela pediu que eu ligasse.
