The partitive: some coffee, please

  1. 1

    Kahvia, leipää: the partitive

The most Finnish ending of all — -a / -ä for “some” — with juoda (to drink) and syödä (to eat).

    • The partitive (-a / -ä, -ta / -tä) means some — an amount, not a whole thing.
    • Use it for food and drink in general, after numbers above one and for languages.
    • kahvi → kahvia, leipä → leipää, tee → teetä, olut → olutta, vesi → vettä.
    • Juoda and syödä: juon, juot, juo… / syön, syöt, syö… — the hän form adds nothing.
    • Kaksi kahvia, kiitos! — two coffees, please.

    Haluaisin… Ordering at the counter

Order, ask the price and pay — and meet consonant gradation in otan, ottaa.

    • Haluaisin… (I'd like) and Saisinko…? (could I have) are the polite way to order — with the partitive.
    • Yksi kahvi, kiitos — kiitos does the job of please.
    • Paljonko se maksaa? — How much is it? Maksan kortilla. — I'll pay by card.
    • Ottaa: otan, otat, ottaa, otamme, otatte, ottavat — consonant gradation softens tt to t.
    • In cafés you usually order and pay at the counter.

Finland's coffee culture, the question word mitä — and Marina's first korvapuusti.

    • Mitä asks about food and drink: Mitä sinä otat? — mikä asks what is…?
    • Syödä: syön, syöt, syö, syömme, syötte, syövät.
    • Café words: pulla, korvapuusti, ruisleipä, tuore, herkullinen, maistaa.
    • Vielä yksi — one more; Minä myös / Minäkin — me too.
    • Kahvi ja pulla is the heart of Finnish coffee culture — say yes to kahville!

    Torilla: at the market

Quantities, “lots of”, berries and fish — the partitive at Helsinki's harbour market.

    • Amounts take the partitive: paljon kalaa, vähän maitoa, kilo perunoita.
    • Countable things in the plural: -ja / -jä, -ita / -itä — marjoja, mansikoita, perunoita.
    • Uncountable things stay singular: kalaa, maitoa, kahvia.
    • Rakastaa always takes the partitive: Rakastan marjoja. Rakastan sinua.
    • Jokamiehenoikeus lets everyone pick berries in the forest.
